Design and build combined
After 17 years in New Zealand’s mid-range to high-end residential market, Auckland-based design and build company Box is entering a new phase. The business has announced a shift in structure, now offering its services in two distinct arms: Box Studio and Box Build.
The move responds to changing client demand and opens the door to a wider range of projects. It also allows the company to expand beyond its established base in Tāmaki Makaurau into regional markets. While the structure is new, the core offering remains familiar. Clients can still choose a full design and build service, or engage either the design or construction team independently.
Co-founder Dan Heyworth says flexibility sits at the heart of the change. “Clients can still access our full wraparound design-and-build option,” he says. “But now, they can choose their own journey. If they only need to use our talented in-house designers, or solely contract our proven build team, they can.”
Box Studio will lead the design side of the business. The team will work across new builds as well as renovations, extensions, and additions. This reflects a growing trend among homeowners who are choosing to renovate their homes rather than build new ones. The studio has a strong interior design capability, supporting a more holistic approach to projects.
As part of this shift, Rosanna Anderson has joined as Design Manager. She brings experience from Architecture Page Henderson and Adam Taylor Architecture. “Rosanna brings fresh design ideas to our amazing team of creatives, and her problem-solving ability means she can plot a clear pathway for any project,” says Heyworth.
The Box Build team is led by co-founder and Construction Manager Nat Jakich. With three decades of experience, he brings deep technical knowledge and a strong understanding of compliance and project delivery. Jakich’s leadership supports the company’s ability to take on a broader range of work.
Alongside new builds, the expanded design offering reflects a shift in how people are living in their homes. “Post the pandemic, homeowners are more interested in reimagining their existing houses. With our building background, we can advise people on the risks involved and manage consents,” says Heyworth.
For Box, this evolution reflects both growth and continuity. “We may be exploring new horizons and building on our core strengths,” says Heyworth. “But underneath, we have the same DNA.”
